RACE and SOCIAL JUSTICE
Crisis brings out the best and worst of us. Unfortunately, the “worst” includes perpetuation and exacerbation of racism, xenophobia, and othering. Data in cities across the U.S. shows racial disparities in access to healthcare, testing, deaths, and financial impacts for Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities, once again revealing the deadly consequences of institutional and structural racism. From the early days of the outbreak, Asian Americans have been targets of negative stereotypes, interpersonal racism, and hate crimes related to COVID.
“If you don’t center race, you haven’t solved the problem.” -Angela Glover Blackwell, Founder of PolicyLink
