Boards & Commissions: Appointed Positions

Serving on a city board, commission or committee is an important way to participate in government policy making. For far too long the experiences and perspectives of many within the community have been underrepresented or unrepresented within boards and commissions. Civic-minded community members who believe in the power of good governance can participate as a way to advocate. Serving in these roles can also be an entry point to a career as a public servant. You do not need to be a U.S. citizen to be on a board or commission.

Why are boards, commissions and committees important?

Boards, commissions, and committees play an important role in city policy-making because they provide advice to city councils on public policy matters. The inclusion of people with different life experiences and identities in boards, commissions and committees will help to ensure that those experiences and perspectives  are acknowledged, understood, and lifted up when policies are being made.

What’s important to you? Are you passionate about accountability/transparency, affordable housing, budgets, climate, cycling, equity, healthcare, people without houses, police funding, public safety, transportation? Decisions are being made every day that impact our communities and our future. Institutional and systemic change is possible with our powerful ideas and leadership.
