Calls to Action

“Decisions are made by those who show up!”

Many urban planners and elected officials love this quote, because it appears to praise the American government as inclusive. We know this is not the case, but since we cannot quickly and realistically change the decision-making process, we need you to participate in it! Sending emails is a good start, but the most effective way to make sure your elected leaders know what’s important to you and your community members is to speak at public meetings. It can be very intimidating, but it’s very important!

Help Pass the Redmond Renters Bill of Rights!

Nearly two-thirds of Redmond’s households are renters, and everyone deserves stability and fairness. Please commit to speaking in support of the Redmond Renters Bill of Rights at the Redmond City Council Meeting on Tuesday, May 19 at 7 pm! Please contact Kraig Peck for any questions or to confirm you want to speak.

Items on the Renters Bill of Rights:

  • Truth in renting to limit junk fees
  • Extend protections against unfair evictions when leases end
  • End rent traps by letting renters on leases facing high rent increases to move without penalty
  • Ban retaliation for seeking to negotiate rent, asking for repairs, or exercising rights
  • Inform renters of their rights with a City website to ensure renters know their rights
  • Advice and advocacy for renters by City or contracted staff

To speak in person, please use the speaker sign-up sheet located at the entry of the City Hall Council Chambers available from 6:30–7:00 pm on the day of the meeting. You will have three minutes to provide your comment.

  • Please note that there are separate sign-up sheets for Public Hearings and Regular Meetings. You may speak for both; make sure to sign up once on each sheet and follow the agendas to know when it’s time for public comment on each topic.

To speak live over the phone, please email the City Clerk starting Friday, May 15 until 2 pm on Tuesday, May 19 for the remote comment registration form. You must submit your completed form by 3 pm on Tuesday, May 19.

You can also provide written public comment (400-word limit; please label your comment as “Items from the Audience”) by emailing cityclerk@redmond.gov by 2 pm on Tuesday, May 19.

For translation services, please contact the City Communications department (communications@redmond.gov) at least five business days before the meeting. Please specify that you need a translator for public comment, the date of the meeting where services are needed, and the language needed. You may also call 425-556-2900 and leave a message for Communications with this information.

No overall time limits for public comment periods at meetings.
